Summer Doesn't Drain You. It Shows You What Was Already There.

July 23, 2026 · 6 min read

Tired by 2 PM and blaming the Florida heat? Late summer doesn't create your patterns — it exposes them. How to use August as information, not an excuse.

Everyone in Southwest Florida blames July and August.

Tired by 2 PM? The heat. Short fuse in traffic? The heat. Sleeping badly, skipping the morning walk, running on iced coffee and willpower by Thursday? Heat, heat, heat.

The heat is real - I'm not going to pretend a Gulf Coast August is a neutral event. But after years of watching my own patterns and talking with women who feel exactly this way every summer, I've come to a different conclusion:

Summer doesn't usually create those patterns. It exposes them.

The season that tells on you

In the easy months, your routines quietly cover for you. The weather invites the walk, so you walk. Season keeps the calendar full, so you're distracted from how you actually feel. The margin is wide enough that skipped water, short sleep, and a 3 PM sugar habit never present a bill.

Late summer removes the margin. The heat is a stress test, and whatever was already fragile - hydration, sleep, energy, patience - is what breaks first. That afternoon crash you're blaming on August? It may have been there in March, hiding under better weather and a busier schedule.

That's not bad news. It's the most useful information you'll get all year, delivered free of charge, every single afternoon.

Reading the season instead of surviving it

If August is going to tell on you anyway, you might as well take notes. Not a program - just attention:

Notice when your energy actually dips. Is it 2 PM every day, or only the days that started with coffee instead of breakfast? Patterns you can see are patterns you can work with.

Notice what you reach for. The 3 PM reach - sugar, salt, caffeine, your phone - is rarely random. It's usually a substitute for something the morning didn't provide: food, water, rest, or a pause.

Notice which parts of your day leave you steadier and which leave you spent. People, rooms, tasks, hours. Your energy is already keeping this ledger. Most of us just never read it.

None of this is diagnosis - I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice. It's awareness. But awareness is where every real change I've ever seen actually started. You can't adjust a pattern you've never watched.

Why I built tools for exactly this

This kind of noticing is the entire premise of my Body Insight System - a free, simple tool for tracking what your body has been trying to tell you: energy shifts, cravings, sleep changes, the signals we usually override. It takes minutes, and most people see their first pattern within a week.

And if you want structure and company rather than a solo project: the Living Well Reset runs July 27-31 - five days of simple supportive meals, real hydration, early nights, and paying attention on purpose. No flights, no hotel, no perfection required; you do it from your own kitchen with a guide, a journal, and support. It is the gentlest possible way to close out a summer that's been running you, instead of the other way around.

The reframe

You don't have to love August. But before you write it off as the month that drains you, consider that it might be the month that's finally being honest with you.

The patterns were always there. Summer just turned the volume up. Listen while it's loud - it's easier to hear.
