A Fall Weekend in Cape Coral: Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oktoberfest All Weekend

Cape Coral's Trunk or Treat & Halloween Movie is Friday, October 23, and Oktoberfest runs its second weekend, October 23–25. Dates, times and what to bring.

Some weekends in Cape Coral ask you to choose. This one lets you do two things, and that's worth saying out loud before the week gets away from you.

Friday night: Trunk or Treat at City Hall

The City of Cape Coral's Trunk or Treat & Halloween Movie is on Friday, October 23, at City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. It's free. Children 5 and under can come at 5:00 PM for trunk displays and candy, and the evening opens to all ages at 6:00 PM. Candy is given out while supplies last, and the lawn has inflatables, a trackless train and a costume contest. A Halloween movie is shown first, followed by a drone show over City Hall.

The city's advice is to bring lawn chairs, blankets and your own treat bags, which is the whole plan for an event that happens mostly on a lawn. The page doesn't list the movie title or exact start times, so check the city's site or its social channels on Friday for the latest.

All weekend: Oktoberfest on Pine Island Road

Cape Coral Oktoberfest, run by the German American Social Club at 2101 SW Pine Island Road, is in its second and final weekend, from Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25. I'd check the club's page before heading over, since hours differ by day and I'd rather you rely on the source than on me.

If you went last weekend, there's no rule against going twice. If you drove past the tents and wondered, this is the last chance this year.

Why I make a point of listing weekends like this

I'm a Realtor, so people sometimes ask why I spend time on events. The honest reason is that a home is only half of what someone is deciding when they choose a place to live. The other half is whether there are ordinary evenings worth walking out the door for, and whether the neighbors you haven't met yet are likely to be in the same crowd.

Cape Coral is good at that in a way that's easy to miss if you only look at it from the car. A city lawn becomes a movie theater for a night. A social club hosts a festival that people plan around. Neither requires an invitation, and both are a decent way to find out whether a place fits you, whether you're new, visiting, or have lived here for years and always meant to go.

A few practical thoughts

Go early to anything on a lawn, so you can choose your spot. Give yourself more time for parking than you think you'll need. If you're bringing children, pick which event is the main one and treat the other as a bonus, which makes for a better evening than trying to do everything. If you're newer to Southwest Florida, bring someone who has been before, or go alone and say hello. People here tend to respond.

If you're thinking about making Cape Coral home

Seasonal residents, visitors and people considering a move often ask me what daily life here is really like, and I find a weekend like this answers it better than a brochure. You see who shows up, how people treat each other in a crowd or a place on the lawn, and whether the pace suits you. If you're weighing a move to Southwest Florida, or a second home, spending a fall weekend like this one before you decide is time well spent.

Next month, in ten

I put together a monthly email with ten local events I'd tell a friend about, five in Cape Coral and five around Southwest Florida. Every one is checked and dated, and there are no always-on filler listings. November's goes out at the end of this month. Reply NOVEMBER and I'll add you.

Which one are you doing this weekend?
